According to a May 15th article published in The BVI Beacon, plans are underway to finally remove over 200 wrecked and abandoned boats that still remain after Irma.
The Derelict Vessel Removal Project is being spearheaded by the BVI Recovery and Development Authority. “The removal project includes 181 vessels identified as derelict, plus an additional 23 that have been identified for auction, for a total of 204,” the article stated. It goes on to say that the vessels that are not sold, will be incorporated into the derelict boats disposal program. “The vessels have been grouped into seven work packages based on location: Beef Island, Sea Cows Bay, East End, Paraquita Bay, Road Town, West End and another package consisting of outliers (including four vessels on Jost Van Dyke),” the article said. Apparently, the area with the most vessels is Beef Island with 39 boats still remaining wrecked on shore (see photo above). Also noted was the fact that post Irma there were approximately 300 vessels identified as derelict, but that about 120 have already been removed by other means.
The wrecked vessels have been a major eyesore, for residents and visitors alike and it will be great to see these areas finally cleaned up. Work is set to begin by September.
